Patife

Born and bred in Brasil’s music and clubbing capital Sao Paulo, DJ Patife (translation: scoundrel), is the king of the Liquid Funk sound.

His first contact with Drum n Bass was in 1993, through a friend, DJ Marky, who at the time, was working as a sales assistant at a record shop where Patife bought his vinyl. He took advantage of his residency at the renowned Arena Music Hall club in Sao Paulo to push this new type of music, but found it hard to break the Drum n Bass scene to the masses.

In 1997, Patife travelled to London with Marky. This led to him securing a contract to host his own Movement parties in Brasil. Patife was then invited back to the UK where he played alongside some of the scene’s top DJs. A fitting way to celebrate the efforts of a pioneer who was now actively establishing DnB in Brasil.

Nowadays, the Drum n Bass scene in Sao Paulo is regarded as one of the most vibrant on the world scene. This is largely thanks to the efforts of Patife and Marky. Patife has released a number of albums to the Brasilian market with sales figures reaching the 25,000 mark (an unheard of number in South America). He has had a number of releases on V Recordings and Full Cycle. The Brasil EP immediately put Patife on the international map, with his remix of Sambassim being recognized as a groundbreaking Drum n Bass classic.

DJ Patife selections show the mark of a true musical connoisseur. Going deep in to the musical side of Drum n Bass while spreading the good liquid vibes.

Cleveland Watkiss – MC/Vocalist

Cleveland Watkiss has been surrounded by music his whole life. His father who was a DJ, often played ska, blue beat, reggae, jazz, blues and calypso.

In 1985 Cleveland was one of the co-founders along with Courtney Pine, of the extremely influential Jazz Warriors big band. His vocals can be heard on the Warrior ’s debut album, "Out of Many People" . He was voted best vocalist for three consecutive years in the Wire/Guardian Jazz Awards.

Cleveland also has vast experience of gospel music. He can be heard on the Stevie Wonder track, "Free", from his album entitled, "Characters". He was also invited to perform live at Wembley with Stevie’s Wonderlove band.

Watkiss has released a multitude of critically accliamed albums. A true musician to the core, Watkiss and Patife perfectly compliment one another both on stage and in the studio.

‘Cleveland is one of the most amazing people I have worked with. He is an innovator who is finally bringing all his repertoires – DJ, MC, singer and player into the frame. He’ll stimulate and intrigue and ultimately entertain.’ - Talvin Singh
