BAD COMPANY UK
When initially released in spring 2000, Bad Company’s debut LP ‘Inside The Machine’ was hailed as a stone cold classic. It came off the back of a devastating trail of massive singles, with ‘The Nine’ – on Grooverider’s Prototype imprint, selling out faster than it was re-pressed.
Alongside some dancefloor smashers that had built their meteoric reputation, the album showcased their production talent with brilliance. With contrasting atmospheres like in ‘Colonies’ with its cold, glassy strings or the intricate rhythms of ‘Trick Of The Light’, ‘Inside The Machine’ was a varied yet coherent album that propelled BC from dancefloor darlings to serious artists. The album was praised as much in drum and bass circuits (‘mesmerising’ – Atm), the dance press (‘the Bad Company supergroup have outstripped all expectations’ - Mixmag), from lifestyle glossy magazines (‘A Landmark release’ – FHM) to broadsheets (‘a steroid-packed shot’ – The Times).
To make the most of the package, BC have added some serious bonuses, 10 of their best previously unreleased tracks, including ‘Sneakers’ with DJ Trace and the infamous ‘Fuck Miami’, adding an extra dimension to this already impressive package.
Since they parted company in 2002, all four have remained at the forefront of the scene. Maldini and Vegas still work together for their Bad Taste imprint, churning dancefloor hits such as ‘Re-Animator’, D-Bridge has produced gorgeous melodic tracks for Liquid V, Quarantine, Soul;r and his own imprint Exit and Fresh has set up Breakbeat Kaos with Adam F, releasing a critically acclaimed album and the recent monster ‘Skream’.
Still, seven years after its initial release, ‘Inside The Machine’ sounds as fresh as ever, and as much of a landmark. This album has inspired the Pendulum generation and will now be there to inspire many more.
THE QEMISTS
Between the three of them, they have worked in every musical capacity available, From remixers of Coldcut, The Cooper Temple Clause, Dr Octagon and Roots Manuva among others. To live sound engineering for Basement Jaxx, Kano, Lady Sovereign, as well as many of the biggest names in Drum n Bass.
In 2005 their debut release on Ninja Tune, a remix of Coldcut’s “Everything is under control” had massive support from Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, 1Xtra’s Crissy Criss, Andy C, Pendulum, as well as making it into Pendulum and Coldcut’s Radio 1 Essential mixes. Laurent Garnier said about the track “The Qemists remix is a phat monster motherfucker – Great! Can’t wait to play it at the weekend!” (And he did!)
Always on a mission to do something different, their 3 man, 2 deck, 2 laptop DJ set was born, bursting with double drops, live remixes and the sound of technology. This has landed them a residency at Devotion in their hometown of Brighton, and sets around the country.
The Qemists first started working together as the drummer, bassist and guitarist in a rock band. This took them around the UK and Europe gigging and gave them a lot of time in the studio recording. It was during this time, around 1997, that an interest in Drum n Bass took hold, and some of the groups early DnB efforts started to get airplay. For years the three were playing in a rock band by day and producing and djing dnb by night, which lead to an inevitable conclusion; why not do both at the same time.
