FRICTION
Brighton raised, multi award winning DJ Friction is one of a handful of DJ’s to have smashed through the ranks and become a superstar in his genre simply through an unbelievable talent behind the decks. He is regarded by many as not only the most skilled but also the most diverse DJ in drum & bass. The past year has seen massive releases on Hospital, Shogun Audio and Metalheadz with production partner K-Tee. Their ‘Back To Your Roots’ Remix is still one of the biggest d’n b tracks of the last couple of years and ‘Assassin’ Vol.1 looks set to be one of the best dance compilations of the year, confirming Frictions rise to the top of the game. The fact is that regardless whether he’s playing to a 5000 capacity festival or a 400 strong club, a Friction set is always one to remember.
SP:MC
Making the breakthrough into the world of the D&B MC is no small task, yet 29 year-old SP:MC has managed to establish himself as one of the busiest & most innovative on the circuit. He has close ties with Shogun Audio [after touring extensively with DJ Friction], & Emcee Recordings [MC GQ made him resident at his own Emcee Monthly Sessions in London after hearing one of SP's early mixtapes]. He has also represented for labels as diverse as Renegade Hardware, Commercial Suicide, Hospital, Prototype, Bassbin, Good Looking, Metalheadz, Quarantine, Digital Soundboy, Symmetry, Soul:R, Exit, Innerground, DNAudio, Valve, Tempa & 3024.
Versatility & quality control are a guarantee when SP’s in the building. He cites MC GQ, Dynamite & Conrad as early influences. 2003 saw him nominated for ‘Best Breakthrough MC’ at the Knowledge D&B Awards [alongside Eksman & Armarnni Reign] He was then nominated for ‘Best MC’ [alongside Eksman & Skibadee] at BBC 1Xtra’s XtraBass Awards in March 2007. He was again nominated for ‘Best MC’ at the D&B Arena Awards in August 2009.
If a diary bulging with U.K gigs & worldwide tours wasn’t enough, he then started to produce tracks in 2005. Collaborations with Breakage ['Shadow' on Breakage's debut LP, and 'The Lurgie' on Shogun Audio] set the standard, followed by tracks with fellow MC Verse ['Surrender', 'Border Patrol', & 'Lost Souls']. May 2008 saw his firing dubstep track ‘Trust Nobody’, released on the infamous Tempa imprint. The 12″ not only had a great response at street level, but also received widespread critical acclaim.
More recently, Code 3 [consisting of long time friends SP:MC, Jubei & Dakuan] released their debut 12″, ‘Delta’ and ‘Escape Hatch’ on Shogun Ltd [SGN:LTD 014]. Many of the scene’s elite, including DJ Friction, Fabio, Ed Rush, Doc Scott, dBridge, Breakage, DJ Marky, DJ Die, Break & Alix Perez lent their support. ‘Payload’ also by Code 3, followed soon after on Coded Music. Next to drop is a second SP:MC dubstep 12″ on Tempa ['Taiko Dub' & 'Bad Dreams' with Joker D], then Code 3 releases on Critical, and dBridge’s label Exit Records.
BREAK
Acquiring a love for the breakbeat through jazz and funk records, Break took to the drums at a young age, learning piano along the way and taking to the turntables at the age of fourteen.
A talented musician with a wide range of influences, Break looks to push the barriers in whatever he’s doing. Crisp breaks, heavy bass and strong melody are stable marks of his productions making him a firm favourite with a variety of the scenes top DJs.
Break hooked up with the DNAudio crew back in 2001 after meeting Squire through mutual friends. Since then he has played an important role in the label’s expansion, working closely with Silent Witness in developing a fresh & devastating new sound.
DJ A-Sides was quick to sign Break’s debut, Cocktail for the ‘East Side Jamz 2’ LP and wasted no time releasing his first solo twelve, ‘Sticky Situation’, the ‘Breakout EP’ and a string of other singles.
His partnership with Silent Witness lead to releases on No U Turn and since then Break hasn’t looked back. As one of the most prolific producers in the scene, long hours in the studio have lead to outings on East Side, Fuze, Commercial Suicide, Quarantine, Critical, Invaderz, Explicit, Subtitles, Metalheadz, Levitated, Shadow Law and DNAudio; all building on Break’s reputation as one of the drum & bass’ hottest new talents.
As well as now working closely with Fierce and with singer Kyo in the studio, Break’s busy DJ schedule sees him play across the UK and Europe several times a month, with every set being crammed full of killer fresh dubs blended seamlessly with underground classics.
